Lighthouse shines with winning delivery at Lord’s
MEDIA RELEASE
Lighthouse shines with winning delivery at Lord’s

UK – 7th August 08 - When the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) decided to invest in state-of-the-art scoreboards at its world-famous cricket ground, Lord’s, it chose Lighthouse Technologies to head up the contract. And it was the best decision they could have made.

Lord’s is the home of cricket, which means the Ground’s custodians are constantly working to maintain the highest standards. So when the scoreboards became tatty and dated, the powers-that-be felt it was time to replace them with the latest in information technology.

“We had two scoreboards that had been there for some time and the16,000 light bulbs of which they consisted needed constant replacement,” explains Steve Jones, IT manager at MCC. “We also had a temporary video screen which was brought in for major matches. So when we decided to replace the two scoreboards, the decision was made to add a third and set them all up to be capable of showing video.

“It has been a sizable investment,” Steve admits, “but it’s part of an ongoing policy of upgrading our facility to ensure that Lord’s continues to be the best cricket ground in the world.”

It was essential for MCC to engage the services of the best suppliers, so it hired Gardiner and Theobald as project managers to put out a tender for a full JCT Design and Build contract. At an on-site ‘shoot-out’ between six LED screen manufacturers, Lighthouse screens stood out as the best.

“When we first displayed white text on a black background — which is how a traditional scoreboard would look — the Lighthouse screens provided more contrast than those of its competitors,” confirms Steve. “They provided better display quality when used as scoreboards and for showing video. This was the major consideration in awarding the contract to Lighthouse Technologies.”

As the main contractor, Lighthouse was responsible for the entire project. Installation specialists, EDS were sub-contracted to design and build the screen housings, install and integrate the displays. Lighthouse recommended P16 to produce sharp information and clear replay images across the 11m x 6m screens. Lighthouse also appointed AMX who specialise in electronic control systems to develop an integrated content management system for all three screens.

“This was a significant undertaking for Lighthouse and we have gained a vast amount of experience from our main contractor status,” reveals Graham Filmer, Lord’s project manager for Lighthouse. “But we were wholly confident in our ability to remove the two old scoreboards and their support structures, install a new 20 metre high mast, and to supply the three screens — one for the Allen Stand, one for the Compton Stand and another for the Edrich Stand.

With a strict deadline to adhere to (the cricket season waits for no-one), Lighthouse ran into a challenge that nobody could have foreseen. ”We hit a couple of underground structures that had not been revealed in previous investigations,” explains Graham. ‘But we just had to deal with it and get on with the job. We weren’t going to let anyone down.’

Less of a surprise, but nonetheless testing, has been the issue of weight constraint. With the Allen Stand, for example, Lighthouse had to install within an existing stand and there were severe restrictions with this. Because the Allen Stand screen is suspended from the roof, the new screen had to weigh less than the old one. The limit was 8.5 tonnes and that included the steel support housing. There were some tight calculations.

“To accommodate the restrictions, some sections are custom designed with panels that have lift-off doors so we can gain access for maintenance, and EDS designed bracing members have been engineered to be removable,” he continues. “This means you can take out the bracing, carry out any maintenance and then put the bracing back in again. It had to be designed that way to keep the weight of the steelwork down.

“A lot of work went into the appearance of the screens and the cladding panels mounted on the rear, to keep the screens in line with planning constraints and architectural requirements,” he adds.

Because the support structures for the new screens had to be similar to the previous ones, the size of the display area would also be the same. But since there are more pixels in the Lighthouse screens than in the previous scoreboards, the image is much clearer. With this particular installation there is a maximum of a 200m viewing distance for each screen, a good deal of research went into the size and choice of fonts to ensure the paying public would be able to read them easily.

The system has been designed to access data from Code 27’s widely used Total Cricket Scorer© (TCS), which is displayed alongside video content received from outside broadcast (OB) trucks. So the scorers, who have ultimate control over the boards, can select what they want to show on each screen.

“The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has a separate OB vehicle to create content for the screens, which it does at all major televised matches,” says Graham. “The programme output is then fed into this system which helps to ensure that any ‘live’ match action is displayed within accepted guidelines, which minimizes any potential distraction to both the players and match officials and greatly reduces pressure put on the umpires.”

Because of the distance limitation, Lighthouse chose to utilize a 16-way fibre optic cable to link all three screens to the control room, as well as to the scorer’s box and the OB compound. The issue of data access did prove an additional challenge, however. This was due to the complex nature of scoring cricket matches, but also because the system had to be easy for the Lord’s scorers to use, since they are the people in control of information input.

“There is a lot of detail to go on the screens,” explains Graham. “The AMX control system interrogates the TCS software every second, so scorers have the option to select any score data and format it for immediate display. The fact that the AMX control system could interface with TCS was crucial, because this is the database that people in cricket are familiar with.”

The new screens have now been fully operational at Lord’s since 15 May and everyone is thrilled with them. Having risen to the challenge of being the main contractor for the first time, Simon Taylor, general manager of Lighthouse Technologies’ UK office, remarks: “We are proud to have completed such a successful and prestigious project, and to have contributed to the international reputation of Lord’s as a centre of excellence. It has provided us with valuable experience to take on similar roles in the future.”

Lighthouse Celebrates 10th Anniversary
MEDIA RELEASE
Lighthouse Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Hong Kong - January 29, 2008 -
2008 sees Lighthouse Technologies celebrating its 10th anniversary, a decade throughout which the company’s achievements in the LED screen industry have been consistently and globally recognised as being at the cutting edge of visual media technology.

In an industry that is still in its relative infancy, celebrating ten years of innovation is something that Lighthouse is rightly proud of. It is a testament to the vision of its founders and the skill and dedication of its current team, which continues to incorporate the very latest technology in products which have already spent a decade being regarded as the industry standard, and which will continue to do so.

This anniversary year is set to be a dynamic one for Lighthouse, but the company is not resting on its laurels. “As LED technology has both improved and become more cost effective, doors have been opened for new applications,” says Lighthouse’s managing director, Mark Chan. “These have taken us into new vertical markets such as LED display solutions for highways, airports, train stations and for major sporting events such as the Formula One racing championships, the Olympics, major horse-racing meets and Red Bull Extreme Sports.

“With such a growth of opportunities, new LED manufacturers have entered the market and in doing so increase choice and intensify competition, so Lighthouse is always looking for new ways to differentiate itself by providing customers with both new and improved products, better service, and increased value.”

To achieve this, the company is launching many new products during 2008, many of which can be seen at ISE. Lighthouse has also moved into brand new waterfront office in the latest phase of Hong Kong Science Park and has given its factory a major refit, which now boasts improved facilities throughout as well as a stunning new entrance.

“We were the first to move into the building which housed our old premises and we are the first to move into this new building,” adds Mark Chan. “As a forward-thinking company, outgrowing premises could see us limiting our potential, so we are keen to expand the space available to us before, rather than after, it becomes critical.”

Lighthouse’s Southern European office will also be moving, due to further company expansion. Details of the new address will be made available shortly.

Another change for Lighthouse Technologies is with its corporate identity. After many months of consultation, the familiar Lighthouse logo has been redesigned to better reflect the impact that Lighthouse’s products have on the company’s clients and the industry at large. This re-design is being progressively applied to all of Lighthouse’s literature.

“Looking ahead, product and quality of service will continue to be vital for Lighthouse Technologies,” adds Chan. “Not only are we producing more diverse products, we are also reinforcing our international project management capabilities, to ensure global installations are well supported through initiatives including improved maintenance and support via our network of system integrators and partners.

“With all this in place, 2008 looks set to be another fantastic year for Lighthouse.”

Italian premier division football club chooses Lighthouse LED Screens
MEDIA RELEASE
Italian premier division football club chooses Lighthouse LED Screens

Italy–12th November 08 -
Artemio Franchi Stadium, home to Italian premier division and UEFA Champion’s League club ACF Fiorentina, has recently seen the installation of a new Lighthouse P12-ER LED screen to provide added interest for the club’s supporters and visiting football fans.

Measuring six panels wide by six panels high (9.60m x 7.20m), the 12mm visual resolution P12-ER screen is being used as a scoreboard and to show advertisements during matches. It serves as a medium that can support new and interesting content and provide a valuable additional revenue stream for the club.

Lighthouse handled both the sale and integration of the screen. It was chosen as the best technological solution available to meet the club’s requirements. “P12-ER is an enhanced resolution product, which means more detailed information can be displayed on the screen than with a standard 25mm pixel pitch screen,” explains Alessio Giagnoni, Lighthouse’s sales support manager for Southern Europe. “P12-ER was designed specifically for the sports market. Its 5000 nits of brightness can cope with direct sunlight and its wide viewing angle gives the best possible view for the maximum amount of spectators possible.”

"We chose Lighthouse from amongst several brands. The quality of the screen makes us stand out from other clubs and provides our sponsors, who advertise at the Artemio Franchi Stadium, a better service because of the high resolution of the screen,” adds Salvatore Cuccu, marketing and communication area manager for ACF Fiorentina.

“We found the team at the Lighthouse Italy office very professional and we are completely satisfied with the final result. Our partnership with Lighthouse has been a resounding success. I would like to thank the Southern Europe team for the great effort they have put into the execution of our project. The trust we put in Lighthouse has been repaid."

The screen is controlled by a Lighthouse LIP-XGA interface processor and an X-Drive Pro image scaler via optical fibre connections, with content fed via Class X software provide by Italian company Project Italia.

“This is the first Lighthouse screen purchased by an Italian football club,” concludes Giagnoni. “It has been very successful and we anticipate purchases by more clubs in the future.”

EyeClick’s futuristic interactive displays launched in India
Surina Sayal | afaqs! | Mumbai, March 23, 2009
Israel-based EyeClick – renowned for its interactive media display solutions, which are used for myriad applications including retail spaces, exhibitions, corporate events and museums – has tied up with Bengaluru-based retail display products specialist, Mahendra Associates, for the launch and distribution of their product range in India.

Mahendra Associates is a multi-market product supplier,

representing products of 3M, DuPont and Powerdesk, whose Dynamic Display Environments team within the company focuses on marketing innovative display solutions. The company also offers transit media options under the banner of Mast e-Media.

A number of well-known brands and organizations globally have used EyeClick, an interactive technology, to transform floors, walls and windows into interactive displays, which capture the attention of the target audience, resulting in effective promotions and greater brand recall.

EyeClick displays comprise EyeStep, EyeTouch and EyeWall. EyeStep is the interactive display that people can walk on, and it will react to the person’s movement

. EyeTouch can convert a shop window, counter or table into an interactive display, which will react to touch with as much precision as a mouse click on a computer screen. EyeWall is a large display that can be created on a wall, much like EyeStep on the floor.

Coca Cola, Microsoft, Volvo, Sony, Burger King, Puma, Bacardi and GE are a few brands who have tried this technology. The Beijing Olympic Games also effectively used EyeClick.

Mahendra Patwari, CEO, Mahendra Associates, says, “With a few installations in India, the response to EyeClick displays has been very encouraging. To make this more popular, we have decided to support our customers by creating a demo studio and providing content management services through our associate design company – Anomishere.”

This demo studio will enable customers to try, test and

customize their solutions, before installing them at the target location. The first demo studio is in Bengaluru and three more are planned, one each in Mumbai, New Delhi and Chennai.

Yariv Bar Yam, executive vice-president, global business, EyeClick, who inaugurated the new facility in Bengaluru, says, “EyeClick puts customer satisfaction at the forefront of its business strategy. Utilising our ‘magical’ solutions, retailers report increased sales and in-store footfall, as well as stronger brand awareness.”

He adds, “To enable our customers to capture this value, we are building a global network of quality distributors that share a common strategy – providing the highest quality solutions and outstanding customer care. We are proud to associate with Mahendra Associates to promote our solutions.”

A few displays will also be installed at the Duty Free stores at Bengaluru International Airport during the week.

Setting up EyeClick depends on the size of the display and environment conditions; however, setting up the basic system in ideal conditions takes an hour or two. Due to the availability of a range of templates that a brand can utilize, the need for a full-blown creative campaign, or services of a creative agency, are not necessary to use this medium.

The sale of system is not restricted to promotions. Mahendra Associates is looking at integrating this system into retail store design, exhibition design, interior decoration and events. They will actively market it through the AV display and rental channel too.

According to the company, the medium is most effective in indoor ambiences, such as malls, hotels and restaurants, and retail store windows. It is dynamic, large format and completely interactive. The response is measurable, since it records every interaction.

Regarding costs of using EyeClick, Patwari informs that many media companies would like to price this differently. Some agencies are considering charging on spots per hour, while others may charge on parameters such as creative impact or location. The media resellers can decide on how they would want to position their property.

Discussing the response to the technology, Patwari says, “We have seen unanimous acceptance of the concept across all age groups and demographic segments. It brings out a natural response in the individual. Many times, the kid in every person comes to the fore and the interaction with the technology is honest and genuine. This makes the experience unique, and therefore, a positive influence towards the brand.”

LIGHTHOUSE Outdoor LED Display Screen Installed at DLF Emporio Mall, New Delhi

The screen will display multi-colour, dynamic content and is sure to turn heads in bright daylight or at night.

Interest in LED display technology continues to spread throughout India as customers realize the significant value it adds to virtually any venue. Lighthouse has always been a key innovator in the field, and looks forward to joining hands with more Indian clients to deliver the best possible video display solutions to sports stadiums, concert halls, shopping centers and office buildings around the world.
